Let’s talk about Vesta cases, shall we?

Vesta cases, or simply “vestas,” are small boxes made to house wax or “strike anywhere” matches. You would strike the match on the scored metal on the bottom edge. In Victorian England, matches were often referred to as “vestas” named after Vesta, the Roman Goddess of the hearth and fire.
These matches were prone to spontaneously igniting, so vesta cases provided a safeguard.

Vesta cases first came into use in the 1830s, and reached their height of popularity between 1890 and 1920.
There were three main forms: pocket vestas, table vestas and “go to bed” vestas. Pocket vesta cases—like the one for sale here— were the most popular, often made to be suspended from a fob chain or an Albert watch chain.

This Vesta case is hallmarked Birmingham, 1909-10. It’s clean lines, lovely solid weight, and large silver loop make it a functional thing of beauty.

I added the monogram F.A.B. for the sheer fun of it. A fresh update to an antique classic.

Style Tips:
This is a substantial pendant, so it needs a heftier chain if worn short to stay in proportion.

Or wear it with long chain to give it movement. Either way, it’s a conversation starter that will get a lot attention.

And definitely have fun adding other charms to create a fabulous (wink wink) story of your own.

The chains featured in the images are available in the Silver Linings by SPJ section of my site.
