Large Antique Silver & Rose Gold Sports Medal Fob, Inscribed 1903
Another very fine example of an antique silver and rose gold medal from 1903. Hall marked as made by William James Dingley in Birmingham, UK.
As the inscription on the back tells us, this medal was awarded to C. Shepherd—Senior Champion of the Special Competition at the Adelphi Lads Club Gymnasium.
The story behind each of these pieces is my favorite part. That they were given to amateur athletes in sports clubs across England. That they celebrated achievements and triumphs in such a beautiful way. That they were treasured and worn with pride, usually as watch fobs.
In this case, the ornate silver medal features a blank rose gold cartouche on the front —perfect for a custom monogram—and a detailed inscription on the back. The setting and craftsmanship are lovely and the whole piece is in excellent condition.
I suggest mixing metals with this piece—drawing in the gold by hanging it from a gold chain. Or picking up the silver with some gray pearls. Worn long or short, you’ll see in the pics that this piece makes quite a fabulous statement.
The pearl necklaces shown are available here:
* Sterling silver medal with blank 10k rose gold cartouche
* 1.75 inches high including loop
* Sturdy silver loop to attach
* Inscription engraved on reverse
For the Antik By SPJ collection, I take great care to find very special antique and vintage jewelry pieces and components that are of exceptional quality. It’s my passion to revive their beauty and craftsmanship in a relevant, chic way.
But they do show gentle signs of their age and history. And they deserve to be treated with care and love. Each piece is unique and tells its own story, and unless noted, cannot be altered.
