First a little history...Muff chains or guards were popular throughout the late 19th century and early 20th century. They were worn over a cape or fitted jacket, with a fur or velvet muff attached to the dog clip on the end. Ladies could release their hands from the warmth of the muff without fear of the muff dropping to the ground of getting lost.
While we may not be wearing muffs anymore, these beautiful long chains make a rich, storied addition to your jewelry wardrobe.
This beauty is a wonderful example of antique pinchbeck— a copper and zinc alloy developed by the London watchmaker Charles Pinchbeck in the early 1770s. She’s extra long, and her precise box link chain is a good example of the craftsmanship of that era. These links were tooled by hand—adding a bit of industrial edge to the piece. Her deep gold finish has a lot of interesting patina.
This piece appeals to the woman with a joyful, creative streak. Who likes playing with lengths, layers and a little drama. And who appreciates the history and quality of beautiful things.
I suggest wearing this necklace with an open collared shirt when worn tight at the neck, or long over dresses and sweaters. Add a large pendant, watch fob or coin for impact.
* 63 inches long
* Pinchbeck in a rich gold finish
* Original working dog clip for pendants
For the Antik By SPJ collection, I take great care to find very special antique and vintage jewelry pieces and components that are of exceptional quality. It’s my passion to revive their beauty and craftsmanship in a relevant, chic way.
But they do show gentle signs of their age and history. And they deserve to be treated with care and love. Each piece is unique and tells its own story, and unless noted, cannot be altered.
