Long French Silver ‘Pense à Moi’ Chain Necklace, Early 1900s
This fabulous one-of-kind French Silver “Pense à Moi” chain necklace stole my heart the moment I saw it.
A wonderful example of sentimental jewelry, she features a secret message on the clasp. Look closely and you’ll see a pansy surrounded by a blue enamel oval, resting on the words “a moi”.
The French word “Pense” is a homonym—meaning both “to think” and the pansy flower.
I imagine this lovely chain was given to a woman by her husband or beloved before he went on a long journey or headed off to war.
The clasp reminds her to think of him during his absence. Doesn’t get more poignant or romantic than that, right?!
Each of the links is stamped with a design that looks like a stylized lady bug. Traditionally a symbol of protection and good fortune, the lady bug has featured in jewelry for centuries. Perhaps by wearing this chain, it’s recipient was protecting the person who gave it to her?
We’ll never know the exact story, but there was certainly a beautiful meaning associated with this piece.
