Intaglios have long been a jewelry staple.
Dating back as far as 500 B.C., ancient Roman and Greek intaglios were historically carved from hard stones and used as wax seals. During the Renaissance, glass intaglios became extremely popular in both France and Italy--their craftsmanship as ornate as their ancient stone predecessors.
Since the Neo-Classical movement of the late 18th century, intaglios have been worn and loved as symbols of status, wealth and classical virtue.
This early 1900s beauty is a glass example, made from a mold to showcase the profile of a Roman warrior. The deep green glass mimics the coloring of a bloodstone or green onyx.
She's a bold size and flattering oval shape--perfect inside a collared shirt or worn over a fine sweater or t-shirt.
